The title for this piece is borrowed from a John Warms book that recounts mysterious animal sightings in Manitoba. The book contains typical cryptid accounts but also includes encounters with animals thought to be extinct. As the giant beaver’s preferred habitat shrank due to climate warming, it was thought to become extinct about 10,000 years ago, though sightings persist. These reports make me curious about the futures of animals whose habitats are currently threatened and the potential for their eventual “impossible” sightings.
